Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, California. DuVernay discovered her love for art through the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as a nurse so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay immediately fell in love when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay recognized that art is a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages via artwork. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury, and then examine their junk. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. In this role, she launched her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
